The Effects of Setting

Author Willa Cather embedded literary devices, such as metaphors, similes, and personification, within her writing. 

"As I looked about me I felt that the grass was the country, as the water is the sea. The red of the grass made all the great prairie the colour of wine-stains, or of certain seaweeds when they are first washed up. And there was so much motion in it; the whole country seemed, somehow, to be running."

Life in the praire during winter has to be a little depressing because the flowing grass and the rolling hill turn into a frozen tundra and the greenery die and withers away.  My fireplace symbolizes winter time to me. Whenever I think of the fireplace being used I think of snow and warm nights spent by the fire. The

Argument: Death Penalty

Assertion

• The death penalty should be legal in every state and used.

Evidence 1

• In 1985, 13 year old Karen Patterson was shot and killed along with Ben Atkins, the killer's step-father. "Her killer was a neighbor who had already served 10 years of a life sentence for murdering his half-brother Charles," and he was later given parole because his step-father convinced the parole commity to give Joe Atkins parole.

Commentary

• If Joe had recieved the death penalty instead of parole, Karen and Ben would still be alive.
• I wonder why people think people who kill won't do it again.

Evidence 2

• In 1965, Robert Massie murdered Mildred Weiss and he was later caught and later released on parole ,because he tesified against his accomplise. Eight months later he killed Boris Naumoff.

Commentary

• Yet another example of why the death penalty should be used.
• It's stupid that Rob was given the death penalty for murdering somebody and then they think he's fit to go back into society just cause he testified against his accomplise.

Opposing Claim

• People say the death penalty shouldn't be used because it's "inhumane".
• Some people think that the death penalty should only be used in certain cases.

My Rebuttal

• I think the death penalty should be used in any case deserving the death penalty.

This paragraph is based on inductive thinking because people can still say the death penalty shouldn't be used at all.

War is

War is needed, protecting our rights.
War is unavoidable, keeping us a free nation.
War is unneseccary, shedding innocent blood.

Remembering 9/11

          I don't really remember the exact of events of 9/11, but I now understand that it was a very devastating and shocking day for everyone in America. Two palnes crashed into the World Trade Center buildings. Muslim radicles are the ones responsible for this devastating catastrophy.

        Around 3,000 people died in the attack on the World Trade Center on Sep. 11, 2001. This is a day that will never be forgotten. It is horrible that so many people had to die just because they wern't Islamic. I don't go around blowing people up and killing them because they don't believe the way I do or think differently than me.

         They also attacked the Pentagon on Sep. 11, 2001 killing 630 people. I think this is a very cowardly act, because instead of facing us head on they take over a few planes full of civilians and crash them into buildings.

          Another attack was suppose to happen but the passengers stoped it. I think they are very brave for standing up against the armed terrorist when they were unarmed. If they didn't do that couragious act, many more would have been killed.
